Beat Route: Sam Riley and Garrett Hedlund in 'On the Road'
We look forward to your company at the Hertford Club on Thursday 7 March for 'On the Road': award-winning Brazilian director Walter Salles' long awaited adaptation of Jack Kerouac's ground-breaking novel. Published in 1957 and based on events dating back to the author's experiences in the late 1940s 'On the Road' is a semi-autobiographical expression of youthful rebellion and hedonism that shocked suburban America and divided literary critics, becoming a manifesto for the post-war Beat Generation of writers and beatniks such as William S Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg.
True to the original book this is a road trip movie, following Kerouac's alter ego Sal Paradise (played by Sam Riley). Sal is a troubled young writer recently divorced and mourning the death of his father. Unsure how to break out of his depression he is looking to re-examine his life and yearning for some kind of escape. A meeting with charismatic ex-con Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund) reinforces this wanderlust and Sal sets out with fifty dollars in his pocket on an improvised journey of self discovery featuring such diversions as sex, drugs and jazz. Expect strong language from the start.
Hertford Film Club is proud to present 'On the Road' by kind permission of Icon Home Entertainment.
Admission is free, although we welcome donations to help cover our running costs, and popcorn will be provided. As always the club restaurant will be offering a choice of home-cooked food from 6pm for those with slightly larger appetites.
